Last Thursday ( September 2), I attended my very first Ohio State football game and as many of you know the season opener was against my Alma Mater of Marshall University.
There I was all decked out in my #33 James Laurinaitis jersey( Yes, I know he doesn't play for them anymore but he's still my favorite player ) and my buckeyes necklace and bracelet ( Thanks to Connie and Dave). I was amazed at all the OSU fans and just the atmosphere on campus. It literally was a sea of scarlet and gray!
I was dead-set on rooting for the Buckeyes, but I must admit as soon as I saw the few Marshall fans trickle into the stadium my heart went out to them. For the past four years I was a part of the Marshall Maniacs and cheered for the Herd at every home game, something didn't feel right. I felt like a traitor, now don't get me wrong I LOVE the Buckeyes and have since I was a little girl, but Marshall is MY school. Plus, I always tend to cheer for the "underdog."
I put aside my feelings for a while and just took in my surrounding. Seeing all the OSU fans, their unity and love for Jim Tressel, Brutus, and the players was amazing. Something that shocked me was the variety of fans there cheering on the Bucks one in particular was an elderly man. He was up singing the national anthem, clapping and laughing the entire game... needless to say I was amazed at his pride for his school.
Speaking of pride, keep in mind I was surrounded by OSU fans, and Marshall got the ball, ran and scored a touchdown.. I was ecstatic. The only Buckeye gear-wearing fan who was cheering for the Herd. I was then tapped by a woman behind me who said " I thought you were cheering for us ( Buckeyes)," I replied and explained I went to Marshall so I had to cheer for them at least one. She laughed and said she understood and patted my back. I had to show my MARSHALL PRIDE at least once. :)
Overall, it was a wonderful experience where I was surrounded by great company and a good game. I couldn't have asked for anything better for my first OSU game.
Now this week will be the REAL test as OSU takes on the Miami Hurricanes and Marshall will face their rival, the Mountaineers.... we all know who I'll be cheering for in those games.
One Final Thought...
O H.. IO and "WE ARE MARSHALL!"
