Fun With Acronyms, This Week's Term: NLOID

In this week's installment, Anthony talks about college football recruiting and why it's led to the downfall of the modern-day bicameral legislature.

We're just days away from this year's National Letter of Intent Day, aka Message Board Meltdown Day, and with every passing year, I flip flop on how interested I'll be.  Last year I was as dialed in as it gets, as Parkersburg's own Josh Jenkins signed with West Virginia.  His signing saga alone properly encapsulates how much of a non-science this whole recruiting thing really is.

Jenkins went from committing to the Mountaineers after his junior season, to de-committing, then ultimately joining forces once again with the blue and gold. In the seemingly never ending process, Josh was able to get an experience many other five-star recruits enjoy, visiting various college campuses while being welcomed like a rock star.  In the meantime, college fanbases drooled over the prospect of landing the big fish, while getting caught up in endless speculation. I remember one message board posting claiming Jenkins had purchased an Ohio State football hoodie.  (I have three of these, yet never played a down of college football).

So a year later, the process is the exact same, only the names seem to change.  Ohio State and Michigan are battling over another five-star offensive lineman Marcus Hall. One day he says the Wolverines are his favorite, the next day it's OSU. And the message boards continue to speculate based on what brothers and sisters are telling each other's cousins. The Buckeyes were burned earlier in the week by stud QB Tajh Boyd, who had earlier committed to West Virginia.

So I ask my readers this: Are you interested in this whole process? Is it worth getting worked up over year after year, especially considering  how it seems that just as many kids end up as "busts" as they do all conference performers.

On a side note, Josh Jenkins ridiculed me earlier in the year for sporting a Syracuse hoodie while I was at PHS game shooting football.  Rumor has it he trashed me on a message board afterwards.
