A Blog About Basketball

Anthony talks Mid-Ohio Valley roundball like no other WTAP blogger before him.

When I'm out and about shooting basketball games during the winter season, I'm often questioned about any number of things, such as, "Why do you stumble so much when reading the sports?" or "what's wrong with your hair?"  While I can't address all these answers in one smart aleck response, I can address who the best players and teams are in the area.  If your favorite player and/or team is not listed below, it's because I forgot about how great that player/team was when I started typing this blog. So just assume that I do think your favorite player/team is also the best player/team in the area.

My Suprise Team

Marietta Boys - While they tend to want to play up-tempo, I've been impressed with their ability to adjust to the game situation. Ironton made them slow it down, but they kept their composure late and made all the plays they needed to erase a 7-point defecit.

My Defensive Team

Fort Frye Boys - Their scores might look like they're only playing two quarters of basketball, but they're also a  testament of how well they defend for 32 minutes a night.  This team  could ride their defense and timely shooting to regionals and perhaps beyond. It might just be 1999 all over again for the Cadets

My exerperience Team

Waterford Girls - They've been to regionals three straight years and look to make it again by riding the one seed in their upcoming district. This is one of the best programs in the area, as they continue to reload year after year. You hate to look ahead, but their nemesis, Columbus Africentric, is down from years past (despite another great recruiting class!)

My  Back-to-Back Team

Parkersburg South Girls - They've won it two out of three years and hope ot do it again. Now ranked No. 1 in the state, Coach Stephens has another great cast that can get up and down with the best of them.  Last year they avenged their one loss down in Charleston on their way to the title, they're hoping this year will be a carbon copy.

My Area Girls Class A Team(s)

Catholic/Williamstown/St. Marys - Alright, I know it's a copout. But you'd be hardpressed to find someone locally who thinks they know how this will shape up come tourney time.  Catholic's half court offense might have the best execution, while Williamstown gets up and down the floor faster than some boy's teams. St. Marys might just have the best player in our area in Kelsea Fickiesen. This will be fun to watch!

My Area Boys Class A Team(s)

Williamstown/Catholic - The Crusaders have beaten the Yellowjackets twice, while Williamstown has split with Charleston Catholic, who's beaten Parkersburg Catholic twice. Confused? Me too.

My Athletic Team

Parkersburg South Boys - If this team has the ball for longer than 10 seconds on a possession, I'm shocked. They fly around so fast, that shots are quick to follow. Michael Riggins might have the best jumper in the area.  If they're shooting well, they could make it to Charleston.

NEXT WEEK - I'll break down all the top players in the area!
