The Sorry State of America's Pastime

Kim Lucey calls on Major League Baseball to clean up its act!

Major League Baseball spring training begins this week and I just can't get excited for it.

This is normally the best time of the year for Pirate's fans, when the players begin to arrive in Florida and hope abounds that maybe this year a decent team will be pulled together. But this year I just can't work up my normal level of excitement about that.

I just can't help but think that everyone is a cheater.

I know it's not true that everyone is a cheater, but come on, 104 players tested positive for banned substances in one year? Clean up your act major league baseball! Something needs to be done about this. It is no longer acceptable to turn a blind eye to when players juice up. The leaders of major league baseball need to finally take SOME responsibility for allowing substance abuse to go on for so long in the sport.

Many of these players have already been tried and convicted in the eyes of the public. After Mark McGwire lost votes on this last try to get into the hall of fame I highly doubt if any player tainted by steroid accusations will make it into Cooperstown. But it would be nice to know I could cheer on a baseball player and not find out later he was cheating to do well.

Baseball is a wonderful game and I know I'll get excited for the season again. I'll just try not to let the players ruin it!
