After watching a six-year-old laptop computer recently die a sudden death, I was forced to purchase a new one. It's amazing how much technology advances. My new one (the first HP I've ever owned) came with all the usual batch of software that one never ends up using. But one program brought back memories: a "speech recognition" program. This technology has been around for at least 15 years, and probably much longer. Back in the mid-90s, I paid about $100 dollars for a speech recognition program that, ostensibly, would revolutionize time management. I pictured myself lying in bed, relaxing on the sofa or even preparing a meal as I dictated important information into a headset, letting the computer software do all the "hard work" of typing everything I said.
It all sounded very Star Trekkish! Who can forget how efficient Captain Kirk was whenever he would record his Starfleet logs by simply speaking into a computer on the bridge deck or in his personal quarters?
My first experiment way back then (back in the late 1900s for you whipper-snappers), I decided to use this new speech recognition software by dictating an e-mail to a friend of mine. This friend, who lived in Silicon Valley at the time, had NOT dabbled in such new-fangled software, so I figured that I could not only test this new program but also impress my friend at the same time.
So I got comfortable, laid on my bed, put my headset with microphone on and talked for about 20 minutes. When I finished my e-mail, I walked over to the computer screen to see my magically typed e-mail.
It not only was complete gibberish but also hilarious. The laughing seemed to subside when I remembered I had blown a hundred bucks on the worthless program! I never bothered to use speech recognition software again...until this weekend with the new laptop!
I am confident that 15 years of improved technology, both in speech recognition software and the infinitely faster processing speed of computers, will be my second chance to incorporate speech recognition into all facets of my life whenever something needs to be written.
In fact, I will show you know just how well the technology has progressed right now. I've taken this blog and have used speech recognition technology to retype it below. Read and be amazed at WTAP News Director's log 03-12-2009 at 1737.
