When I first moved here my family and I started looking at the local tourist attractions. We went on the Haunted Parkersburg tour right away, called the Blennerhassett Museum, eventually went to Blennerhassett Island, the Castle, and Fenton but we still haven't made it to all of the attractions in Parkersburg and Marietta. We were so excited to discover this area that was "new" to us.
Ever since I went to Rome when I was in high school, I have been hooked on traveling. I really enjoy it because of the people you meet, the history you learn, and the more you can learn about yourself. I had a friend who once said she feels the most alive when she travels and I couldn't agree more.
Over the past few weeks I had the opportunity to go to some places farther outside Washington and Wood Counties when I did a special report titled "Staycations: Rediscovering the Mid-Ohio Valley" http://www.wtap.com/home/headlines/44736587.html.
We went to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, the Wilds in Cumberland, OH, and zip lining with Hocking Hills Canopy Tours. Some people told me they had no idea these places existed in their "big backyards." I have often found you don't necessarily have to travel far in distance to discover a new place, activity, or culture.
Now I want to hear from you. Where do you like to go to getaway? Do you think there are some hidden gems in Parkersburg, Marietta, or nearby that people don't know about? Are you planning any close to home vacations? Maybe it's a museum, an ethnic restaurant, or bike trail. What do you like to do to escape for a couple hours, a day, or a weekend?
Please let me know! I'd love to hear from you. You can post your comments to the blog or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
