Being someone who is literally cold ALL THE TIME, I like summer largely because finally...I get to spend a lot of the day warm. Or warmer than usual.
But it's not just the sweltering sunshine that warms my heart. It's a few bugs, an amphibian and a drink that make me giddy each summer.
Now, please don't think I like all bugs. I get that they serve a purpose, but I really hate flies. And spiders. And mosquitoes. But, because I have a penchant for all things sparkly, there is one insect that gets my seal of approval- the firefly.
Jim and I were getting out of our vehicle the other night, and I happened to glance up at our trees...and there they were, glittering like Christmas lights. Hundreds of fireflies. I remember when I was a little girl...I would catch the sparkly bugs in a Mason jar and set them on the sidewalk for my own viewing pleasure. I can't wait until the girls get here and we can catch some lightening bugs together. Only now I know it's best to set them free in the evening....instead of trying to keep them forever in that jar.
I was so happy this year when I opened our house windows for the first time, and that night, heard the peepers outside! To me, that is a sure sign of the summer season. Peepers (or baby frogs) are, after my husband's laugh, my favorite sound of all. There's something soothing in the chirping. Granted, they drive Charley the cat nuts...but I still enjoy opening all of the windows in the evening and sitting quietly, listening to the noise.
Finally, I'm a sweet tea addict...and drink it year round. But, no matter how good it is in the winter...it's always just a little bit better in the summer. Again with the Mason jar...I like it extra sweet, with a little ice...on a hot, hot day. There is truly nothing more refreshing...or summery. And Jim makes THE BEST sweet tea...
Fall is fun...and I like the snow in the winter. And of course, spring makes me happy for the sunshine. But it's summer that I really look forward to all year.
This is the first summer Jim and I will spend in our house, and it's these little things that I love, that we get to experience together, that make it more and more wonderful every day.
Until next time, I'll be wishing I was sitting on my porch, sweet tea in hand, watching the lightening bugs and listening to the peepers with my husband...
