It's here again.
Every February 2nd, the comments begin, about a rodent that seems to capture the national attention.
Yes, It's Groundhog Day. (And yes, I'm going to reference that classic movie starring Bill Murray, so get ready for it.)
When I first learned of Ground Hog Day, I couldn't figure out where it's from.
It's an old Scandinavian custom to celebrate the return of spring early. In mid-winter, some people are getting the overcast blues, and so, to cheer themselves up, a tradition of checking the wildlife for signs of Spring became entrenched in the people.
Now, what an overgrown, fat rodent knows about weather, I'll never know, but it's a burden that comes with the territory.
Now for the Bill Murray movie... I didn't get it at first when I saw the flick. I didn't understand why the day was such a curse... but I get it now.
There's no escaping it, even on years when it falls on the weekend!
It's a cute movie and one that will live in our collective consciousness for years and years... like "Miracle on 34Th Street", "A Christmas Story", "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Godfather". (Note: Every one of these classics has something to do with the weather. Think hard enough, and you'll get it.)
So, let's not belabor the point, but realize that it's only about six weeks til Spring on the calendar, no matter what that fat rodent does.
Speaking of fat... get out and walk some before the winter winds return. It'll do us all good!
