I recently read a story about four suicides over a two year span at an Ohio high school... all because these kids were bullied.
This really hit home with me. I'm not sure as to why..but it could be because of the three horrible years I spent in middle school being bullied by other girls. I never understood why those girls picked me out of all the kids to bully, but at least if they were picking on me they weren't picking on anyone else.
We've all had our own run in with a bully or bullies sometime throughout our lives, or maybe we've been the bully.
One thing I've learned is there will always be bullies... no matter what stage in life you're in, there will always be those people who feel some reason to say derogatory, mean and hurtful things to you. I will never be able to fathom why there are people like that, maybe they're unhappy with themselves, maybe they're jealous... or maybe they're just mean.
One thing that is important to ask yourself is this question... " Are you a bully?" I mean really sit and think about it for a second. Do you feel the need to say mean things to people? I ask this question because you never really know what effect your words can have on a person. You never know what's really going on in somebody's life. I'm sure the alleged bullies at the Ohio school never realized what effect their mean words/actions would have on those kids, but it proved to be a deadly one.
So, I ask you before you say something to somebody or about somebody, really think about it. Is there really a need to say this comment or to take that action?
And, always remember.. "Do to others what you would have them do to you," because your words and your actions can have a huge impact on the lives of others.
