St. Patrick's day is one of my favorite days of the year!  Irish heritage is celebrated by many across the country and the world.

Growing up in the Slavens household it was a well-known fact we were Irish.  My dad had a HUGE framed map of Ireland.  I remember asking him why we had it and he pointed to a county in Northern Ireland called Tyrone and said "that's where our family came from."

(My dad always joked and said I got my "feistiness" from the Northern Ireland Slavens. HA!)

I found out many of the men in the original Slavens clan were bog-hoppers, which meant they farmed peat according to my dad.

I never got the chance to meet my grandpa Slavens because he passed away before I was born, but I would've loved to talk to him to know more about my family.

But what I do know is before my family immigrated to the United States, the spelling of Slavens was quite different in Gaelic.

Originally spelled Ó Sléibhín, it was then Anglicized to Slavens, which I think was a common practice back then.

I found all this information to be fascinating, especially since my name is Irish-Gaelic for "raven haired girl," which I think suits me pretty well.  :) ( Thanks, Mom)

I've always been drawn to the Irish culture, especially the dancing, the music and the FOOD!

My mom visited Ireland a few years ago and loved it, I enjoyed hearing her stories so much and  hope to visit one day, maybe I'll find another Brenna over there!

So, tomorrow I will not only celebrate St. Patty's Day, I'll celebrate the SLAVENS clan and my genealogy.

I'd like to leave you all with one of my favorite Irish Blessings...

"May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past."

:)

p.s. I've included the video from St. Patty's Day with Chef Yancy because those Irish Nachos are so tasty! I think everyone should try 'em!
