Overpricing Automobile License Plates

Why does license plate renewal cost so much?

It's not often that I use this forum as a soapbox (No, really.  Stop laughing...)  and I'm going to do it for once right now.

It occurs to me that I live in a county where we pay a surcharge to the County Engineer's office to fund road repairs.  However, there are some who feel that the money is not going to that purpose. They complain that their bridge, their road, their median, their signage... is not getting attention.

I have a hard time denying complaints that their local bridge should have been fixed long ago.  Especially when I've been paying a premium for license plates for more than the last 25 years.

But my point is not what my county is charging me on top of the state. It's the charge the state of Ohio is passing onto me.

Now, I agree that a personalized license plate might cost a little more to produce... to stamp the metal, mail the plate, and create the computer record to track my vehicle.  But that's where the additional expense should end.

Why is it that you have to pay the additional premium AGAIN when you get new license plate TABS?

Certainly, there is no additional expense in producing the tabs.  They can be mailed cheaper than the actual plates, and there's no new computer record to be set up.

So, why do those who have a specialty plate get charged more for already having one?

I would think we all could be saved a ton of money if the state wouldn't charge us full rate for an adhesive sticker mailed to us two months in advance of the expiration of the old one.

Now, before you remind me that the state is dependent upon that extra income, and has budgeted for it... let me suggest that the state should not be budgeting based upon such unfair fees.

There, I'm done now.

Let me go out and apply my license tab before it freezes.
