Shut The...Front Door!

One more post about A.J. Clemente before his "15 minutes of infamy" are up.

I admit I have done some things on the air I'd like to do over again.

But I don't remember (and the memory is always a funny thing) saying anything comparable to what the now-infamous former North Dakota anchor A.J. Clemente said as his first words on the air.

My worst on-air faux pas was the time I said the "d" word (also used by Archie Bunker, among others) before the director was able to turn off my microphone. I was warned not to do it again, and I haven't.

My advice to Mr. Clemente would be similar to what Akron radio news director (and West Virginia native) Ed Esposito has opined in this blog on the web site of the Radio-Television Digital News Association:

One thing I have thought of: newbies like Clemente get fired for saying things that no one should say on the air, while veteran anchors (who should know better) get a pass for doing the same thing. There are all-too-numerous examples of the latter, one resulting in one New York anchor making the statement I used as the title of this blog, upon her return after an unearned hiatus. (I think it has something to do with something called ratings.)

Here's hoping indeed, that Clemente learns from his mistake. And here's hoping that, in the not-too-distant future, when I search "Clemente", I find more examples of "Roberto" than "A.J.".
