Summer, We Hardly Know Ye

It's supposed to be the first day of summer. So why are we talking about fall?

I heard an ad on the radio this morning advising homeowners to, in so many words, "Get your home ready for fall".

This, on the first official day of summer (yes, even though I know it's really been summer for several weeks).

It seems like we're just into one time of the year when they're talking about another.

I know I've spoken about this before.  Some years ago, I wrote that I saw Halloween displays from when we were in the "dog days of summer" (late August).

But then, when I was growing up, August was the time to get in those last weeks of time off from school.  Now, by mid-August, kids are back in school.  And in a couple of weeks, I expect to see the "Back to School" displays up at local stores.  (I digress again, WTAP has been involved in the "Stuff the Bus" promotion to provide school supplies to needy youngsters in July-roughly a month after school has let out for the summer.)

And, in mid-May, we had stories on the air about the entertainment lineups for this year's Parkersburg and Belpre Homecoming Festivals-which were then three months away.

I guess, with everyone trying to get their message out, organizations and commercial concerns are trying to "one up" the other with their announcements.  Which is why we hear Christmas holiday promotions as early as Labor Day, if not sooner.

But, as you get older, time flies quickly enough.  I wish we could slow it down a bit.
