Trick Or Treat Already?

Marketing Gone Wild!

It's close to 90 degrees.  The youngsters are back in school, and they'd probably rather be at the pool.  And I'm sure they're dying to go out and go trick-or-treating!

What, you say...it's more than 60 days to Halloween?  Not if you visit your local grocery, drug or discount store.  You'll find Halloween stuff already on the shelves.

In fact, stores are probably getting ready to display their Christmas merchandise.  The Christmas holidays, however, are a different story:  the holidays are bigger, and retail merchants make a large chunk of their annual revenues on Christmas.

But I doubt there's one youngster out there who has thoughts about dressing up for trick-or-treat right now.  Maybe I'm just different, but, when I was a youngster, it didn't cross my mind until the first of October. (If you have evidence that proves me wrong, there's a comment section that accompanies this blog.)

But that's marketing.  Valentine's Day cards and candy get displayed while the post-Christmas holiday sales are just getting started.  (And I know men hardly think of Valentine's Day until at least February 13.)  Even before mid-February, it's Saint Patrick's Day and Easter, and then the high school and college graduations get their turn.  There appears to be no holiday for retailers other than the one they're gearing up for.

But pushing Halloween before the leaves start to turn and the temperature drops below 80?  That's a trick without much of a treat.

On another subject...I obviously was wrong about my "prediction" about Michael Phelps possibly falling short of winning seven gold medals at the current Olympics.  But there's one other feat Phelps has accomplished that isn't getting much attention.

He has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine no less than FOUR times this summer; two of them before he took part in his final swimming events last week.

So much for the Sports Illustrated cover jinx.
