"Rush" To Judgement?

Much ado about...at the most...very little.

If a sports talk show host anywhere outside of the northeast said "I'm hoping the New York Yankees fail this year", would anyone...in New York or elsewhere...care?  (And I'm not sure some haven't in this offseason.)

So what's all the fuss about what Rush Limbaugh said about President Obama...more than a month ago?

Up until this past week...when the big issue became the AIG bonuses...that's all Democratic politicians and the majority of the news media seemed to be talking about...the comment Limbaugh made on his talk show several weeks ago.  Besides the 24/7 cable channels and political talk shows, it was also in newspaper columns and, of course, blogs.

Did anybody expect conservative Limbaugh, whose career flourished when Democrat Bill Clinton entered the White House in 1993, to say he loved Obama?

Before I go on, let me say that hosts like Limbaugh, Don Imus and Howard Stern have one thing in common: I take all of them with a grain of salt.  The one host I did like was the now-retired Gary Burbank in Cincinnati, creator of characters such as "Earl Pitts: Uh-MUR-ican", who was flat-out funny.

The thing I find ironic about the fallout is that the so-called "media elite" apparently didn't get the memo: El Rushbo is no longer alone in the conservative talk radio universe.  He has competition.  Lots of it.

Radio stations across the country, including one here in the Mid-Ohio Valley, air from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. what I call the "Conservative Triumvirate": Glenn Beck, Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.  And beyond those hours there are others such as Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham and Neal Boortz, who have similar opinions.

But I guess Neal Boortz saying "I want Barack Obama to fail" doesn't make news the way it does when Rush Limbaugh says it.  Or perhaps, because Limbaugh makes his video feed available for all the cable news media to use, it adds to the urgency of the statement.

But again, why did people, especially in the "24-hour news cycle" world make an issue about what Rush Limbaugh said for weeks after he said it?

Get over it.
