What I've Been Doing On My Summer Vacation

"Swapping Cars" isn't as simple as it seems...especially in Northern Ohio.

"Swapping Cars" doesn't sound like an exotic way to spend a summer vacation.  But that's what I have been doing while I have been away.

After my mother died last December, my dad decided he didn't need the 2008 Impala he bought last summer.  A 2007 Buick is already parked in the garage.  So he decided to give me the car and take ownership of my 2003 Cavalier.

That requires exchanging car titles and licenses.  The exchange of car titles was fairly easy, albeit somewhat expensive.  But exchanging the licenses is another story.

Northeast Ohio has had, for a long time now, a program called "E-Check". The "E" is short for emissions; something the government long ago decided was necessary for the Cleveland area, considered heavily polluted. So my old car had to pass E-Check in order to have the license transferred over from my dad's "old" car.

That required a wait.  We had the titles exchanged on the Thursday before the 4th of July.  But Friday was considered a state/federal holiday, and the 4th, of course, WAS a holiday. So the E-Check test had to wait until Monday.

Since my old car is nearly six years old, I wasn't sure it would pass.  But it did.  So I have driven back to the Mid-Ohio Valley in a one-year old, but virtually "new" car.

Maybe next summer, I'll do something really exotic.  Like swap homes.
