After a tumultuous 2008 election year, this year has been like a long nap we desperately needed.
Not that we didn't need "change" last year, as Barack Obama said repeatedly (and the jury may be out for a long time on the issue of whether he has delivered), but we needed a breather from those endless campaign speeches and, particularly, campaign ads. Even the Ohio election, with the exception of ads for the casino issue, has been relatively quiet.
But, like all things, that's not going to last forever. Because, the campaign for 2010 is about to get under way (and already has, in some cases).
2010 will be an election year for the U.S. House of Representatives and Ohio's statewide offices (while there are no statewide races in West Virginia, the matter of Sen. Robert Byrd's future might get interesting).
As usual, there are a number of Republican candidates seeking long-time congressman Alan Mollohan's seat (and, in case you didn't know, Mollohan is still the subject of an ethics probe which was the key issue in the 2006 campaign, but, for some reason, not so much in 2008). Most of the interested candidates so far could best be described by the Cincinnati Bengals chant of "Who Dey?". And it may be Shelley Moore Capito's last congressional run before she tries either for the U.S. Senate or the Governor's office in 2012.
What this means is that the charges and counter-charges will be in the media almost every day. And, of course, as primary/election day draws closer, we'll see plenty of those ads which, in referring to whoever the incumbent is, will end with some variation of "(The opponent)...you just can't trust him/her." Or, "Call (congressman so-and-so's office phone number), and tell him/her to tell the truth on (key campaign issue...health care, for instance)".
It's been a nice break. But it's time to wake up. The latest nightmare is just beginning.
