Just Who Is This Scott Brown?

Maybe someday we'll get his name...and maybe even his opponent's name...right.

One problem with the news media...is that we take ourselves too seriously...and that we don't loudly admit our mistakes.

Two weeks ago...hardly anyone in the media had heard, or said much about Scott Brown...the Republican who just won the seat Ted Kennedy had held longer than much of the current population of the United States was alive.  (And yes, I watch Fox News just enough to know they weren't saying much about him, either.)

We couldn't get the name of his opponent right, for that matter...many of us were calling her "Marcia" instead of Martha Coakley.  (Do I have to say there's a Brady Bunch joke there somewhere?)

I couldn't get Brown's name right on the day of the election...for some reason, I thought it was Rick.  I hope that's proof I can own up to my mistakes.

The day after the election, people I encounter regularly were calling him "the next President of the United States", which may be a reference to the fact that Barack Obama practically came out of nowhere in 2004.  I think it's a little early to make that kind of proclamation.

One thing is for sure: the Democrats underestimated not only Brown, but the voters of Massachusetts. Apparently, they thought whoever won the party's primary would win the election.  They must have forgotten about Harry Truman in 1948.

NBC/MSNBC made an issue of Brown being a nude model while working his way through college. I guess they didn't realize that, after Bill Clinton, nothing shocks the American public.

Late last year, I noted that the "quiet election year" of 2009 was over and things would heat up again in 2010. I guess I was right.
