As I have said before, people have often asked me when I plan to retire.
You don't always have complete control over that, but my basic answer is, "Not any time soon".
But someone who has been in the business about as long as I have has retired, and he has ties to the local area.
Local residents may remember Fred Kight because his mother, Barbara, was a long-time employee at United Bank (and its predecessors). WTAP covered the story when she retired from the bank a few years ago.
Fred, meanwhile, has been at Ohio University's radio and television station, WOUB, for more than 30 years, and, at one time, worked at stations in Parkersburg, his home town.
WOUB recently announced on its website that Fred has now retired:
When I was at OU, Fred was the news director (another way of saying he was the only full-time news employee) at WATH/WXTQ, Athens' commercial broadcast radio station. I saw or spoke to him frequently over the years, but never worked directly for him.
Nonetheless, Fred has one advantage over me. He actually grew up in the Mid-Ohio Valley, and is to be commended, among other things, for his lifelong dedication to the region.
Speaking of comings and goings, I really shouldn't be the one to spill these beans, but WTAP is losing one of its anchors at the end of this week (January 11).
Allison Burke's husband of five months, Patrick, has accepted a job in Cincinnati, and both will be moving to the Queens City.
Allison was our second Marietta bureau reporter when she arrived in 2007, and, a year later, became anchor of our 5 P.M. news and of our Fox Parkersburg News at 10.
While this means there is an opening here for an anchor, I have a question for Fred Kight:
Fred, are you sure you're officially retired?
