"Having It All"...Just Not All At Once!

From wife and mother to successful businesswoman.

The recent (overblown) comments about Ann Romney's role in life have once again raised the question...should women aim for motherhood/raising a family or a career?

My mother provides one (if not the only) example.

During the first 15 years of my life, her role was primarily that of wife, mother and housekeeper. But by the time my siblings and I were old enough, she ventured into the business world.

Some of that I spoke of after she died in 2008. When we were old enough, she ventured into the "working world"...at about the same time (but not because) the fictional Mary Richards did so on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

She first worked in a family planning clinic, then did substitute teaching, and eventually worked for the local school system, working for its transportation director.

Then, in the early 1980's, she began a business where she counseled high school students on their choice of colleges. The business was a huge success up until the time she ended it in 2001.

There have been plenty of "career women" who have (or haven't) gotten married and had children. I don't fault their choices.  But whatever she did, my mother always put "family first".

And she worked more than a few days of her life.

Happy Mother's Day to moms everywhere...whether they're "employed" or not.
