Pave Parkersburg, Put Up a Parking Lot?

An old jail is about to face the wrecking ball, but what will go up in its place?

There are people who don't think a 40-year old building should come down.  There's some logic to that, considering there are 100-year old buildings around that are still doing their job.

But one reason, besides their age, is what this area usually does with the ground that's still there when the building comes down.

Many a building, historical or not, has come down over the years, and, in its place is not a newer, shinier building, but-a parking lot.  And not a parking lot anyone can use, either.  It's usally a lot one has to rent by the month, or is there, say, for government employees.

Earlier this year, the old Mid-Ohio Valley Transit building, located in the lot usually used by Bureau of Public Debt workers, was demolished.  The parking there was expanded.  Word is, if the old Wood County Jail is demolished, the empty lot will be used for Public Debt parking as well, if not for county employees.

Not every building is historic, although a lot of buildings are characterized that way when they aren't. Still, is there some other use that can be found for an old building site besides parking for a select group of people?

If you watched the premiere episode of  "The Blacklist" Monday night on WTAP and NBC, and thought you might have seen a familiar face, your eyes weren't playing tricks on you.

Former news anchor Sonia Debreczeni, who was here in the mid-1990's, had a small role on the opening broadcast of the new drama.

Sonia has had roles on other TV shows, including one a few years ago on the former Court TV (now Tru TV).

She co-anchored with John Fortney before going (as did John) to the then-new Ohio News Network. In recent years, she has lived in Washington, D.C. with her twin daughters, born in 2007.
