"That's Why God Made The Radio"

Who said "oldies" aren't goodies?

50 years after we first heard of them...and after years without performing together...the Beach Boys still have it.

If you haven't heard, rock and roll's "Boys of Summer" are performing together for the first time in decades (considering two founding members, Dennis and Carl Wilson, are deceased). Some locals probably remember when the band performed in Parkersburg in 1987. And to go along with that tour, they've released an album of all-new material.

The album, That's Why God Made the Radio, is in the top five on Billboard magazine's album charts, and the single song of the same name is getting at least some radio airplay.

And if you think Aerosmith has had its ups and downs, the fact that the Beach Boys members are even talking to each other is a miracle. The band members have spent more time in court (as well as rehab) than recording and performing during the past three decades. Enough about that.

From the moment I first heard the title cut, appropriately during Memorial Day weekend, I was impressed. It compares favorably with some of their best work of the group's heyday (it's certainly better than the overplayed Kokomo, which, incredibly, hit number one). It reminds us of why we loved the group in the first place: their members' trademark harmonies.

It's release is also well-timed: it came out with the onset of summer. It talks about memories of our teenage years; "crusing" with the top down and the radio on, and our experiences (some of us, anyway) of a summer night.

Reality is, most of us never owned a convertible top car. And those "backseat" memories may be more in our dreams than in our memories.

None of that really matters, though. The Boys (specifically, songwriting legend Brian Wilson) were always great at capturing those summer images, be they real or imagined. And with another great song, along with their tour, we'll still be having fun All Summer Long.
