Will Anyone Be Glad To See Summer Over?

A question I normally wouldn't ask, but this hasn't been a "typical" summer.

While I was thrilled (as were several local school systems) that this past winter wasn't harsh, I wondered when...and how...the payback would come.

I got my answer on June 29, when one of this area's worst storms ever struck, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people (including me) for several days. And that's in addition to near-record high temperatures which, along, with humidity, has left me without much personal energy some days.  On top of that, I was out sick for the longest period of time I can remember in years (yes, the less said about that, the better).

That "derecho", by the way, from a historical standpoint, came almost 14 years to the day after a series of storms in late June of 1998, which knocked over trees (but mostly, not power) in Marietta, and led to flooding in other areas, and a number of deaths in Meigs and Noble counties in Ohio. (This storm, thankfully, has directly resulted in no reported deaths.) The difference is that the oppressively hot weather which preceeded it cooled off considerably, and the rest of the summer, as I remember it, was relatively mild and pleasant.

There's been no such luck this time. That's why I suspect a lot of people, at least secretly, wish this summer would end, even those who are not fans of winter weather.  We just need a cool spell.

I don't know if we'll get that right away. I have heard predictions that this "warmth" will continue into the fall, as it did in 2007, when I was covering the Lowell Oktoberfest on the first weekend in October, with temperatures around 90 degrees.

But with the first day of August signaling the beginning of the "unofficial" end of summer; usually around Labor Day, although some kids will be starting back to school later this month, people are hoping for cooler weather.
