Shake Up Saturday

Jim blogs on upsets, near upsets, and upset fans.

With apologies to my English Lit teacher.  "Now is the September of our discontent"

After Saturday's loss to Virginia Tech, Mountaineer fans are asking  "now what?".  While Ohio State fans are asking "what was that?"

The eighth ranked Mountaineers were the victim of an old fashion beat down put on them by the East Carolina Pirates.   The Pirates showed they were for real the week before by knocking off Virginia Tech.    Saturday they were better than the Mountaineers in all facets of the game.    Skip Holtz had his team fired up and ready to play.  After being humiliated by the Mountaineers year after year, it was finally time for a payback.  And you know what they say about paybacks.

That doesn't make it any easier for Mountaineer fans to swallow.    The loss brings up some legitimate concerns, but is still only September.   There are 10 games remaining on the schedule, and a Big East title and another trip to a B.C.S. bowl are still within the realm of possibility.    So don't  pack away that Pat White jersey just yet and put down that Mountaineer basketball schedule!

Up in Columbus, fans of the Scarlet and Gray are upset for a different reason.   Not because they lost, but because how bad they looked in winning.   Now normally a win is a win.  But when you are the Buckeyes you expect to dominate, especially against Ohio University.

All credit to Frank Solich and his Bobcat players.   They weren't intimidated at all by the Buckeyes.  The defense was outstanding and the offense moved the ball with a backup quarterback running the show.   But after trailing for better than 3 quarters, the Buckeyes finally prevailed with a fourth quarter comeback.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a win.  But Buckeye fans wanted some style points to go with it.  They're wondering if the Bucks looked this bad against Ohio,  how in the world will they be able to keep up with number 1 ranked Southern Cal next Saturday night.   And for Ohio State fans, its not about conference titles, or going to a B.C.S. bowl, its about winning National Championships.    They didn't play like a champ on Saturday, but that 2-0 record still looks good all the same.

I understand that the message boards for both WVU and OSU fan sites were filled with gloom and doom.  People calling for coaches and coordinators to be fired.   Even the return of Rich Rodriguez was implored!    The web has replaced the "Monday Morning Quarterback"  with the "Saturday Evening Quarterback".   I'm glad these people don't manage my 401k.

Marshall went into hostile Big Ten territory and shook things up in Madison Wisconsin.  The Thundering Herd shot out to a 2 touchdown lead over the 11th ranked Badgers.    Reality would set in, and Wisconsin would win going away.  But I think Marshall fans have something to get excited about.   They've got some good young players and may be on the road to recovery.

Congratulations are in order for Marietta College.  Coach Jeff Filkovski and his Pioneers won their season opener on the road at Thiel College.  A fumble recovery in the endzone in the final minute lifted the Pios to victory.   WTAP is proud to be able to televise the Pioneers home opener with Baldwin-Wallace on September 27 .
