The Little Kanawha Conference...the best litlle conference in West Virginia high school football. This year the road to Wheeling goes through 2 of its members: Williamstown and St. Marys,
The Yellowjackets and Blue Devils have both advanced to the Class A semifinals, and both will home field advantage in the final 4.
This coming Saturday afternoon the top seeded Yellowjackets will host Wheeling Central in one matchup, while St. Marys will go up against Weirton Madonna in the other.
Williamstown and Central. Thats a matchup that will get the adrenalin flowing for fans of the Yellowjackets and Maroon Knights. These 2 teams separated themselves from the rest of of the pack for the last 4 years. The Knights have had the upperhand, beating the 'Jackets the last 3 years in a row in the Class A championship game.
But those games were at Wheeling Island Stadium...the Maroon Knight's home field. This time Central has to head down Route 2 to Williamstown and play at the Tomlinson Field. And the Yellowjackets have only lost 3 times on their home turf in the new millenium.
Now is the time and Willamstown is the place for the the Yellowjackets to finally tag the Knights with a loss. It won't be easy, nothing worthwhile is. But the the Jackets have the talent and determination and the best opportunity to date to turn the corner on their rivalry with Central.
On the other half of the Class A bracket stands the St. Marys Blue Devils. The Blue Devils will host Weirton Madonna in the other semifinal matchup
You have to give the Devils their due. The program had many lean years. Then Jodi Mote took over and built a program a player at a time, a win at at time, and now he's taken his team to the playoffs the last 4 years in a row.
At first, the Blue Devils were just happy to be in the playoffs. But that progressed into winning playoff games, and then hosting playoff games. Now St. Marys has advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row.
They did it in impressive fashion with four wins during the regular season over playoff bound teams. The Devils opened the playoffs at home with an 11 point win over Clay-Battelle. Then Saturday they had their biggest win to date, a 56-36 blowout of third seeded Fayetteville.
Now they are poised to take another giant step as they host Madonna on Saturday in the Class A semifinals. The Blue Dons fresh off of an upset of second seeded Pocahontas County. St. Marys has taken care of business at home this year winning all six games. Should that trend continues on Saturday, they will take their game to the championship level.
If both St. Marys and Williamstown are successful, on December 6 Wheeling Island Stadium will be a great place to be for the LKC,
