Win Some Lose Some

Jim blogs on the West Virginia and Ohio State's roles this year in college football's bowl system.

.Do you want to know why the school presidents want to keep the bowl system intact instead of going to a playoff system?

With a playoff system only 1 team gets to finish the season with a victory that gives them bragging rights as number 1. Under the bowl system, dozens of teams will go out a winner and have something to build on for next season

For West Virginia, the recent bowl experiences have have been phenomenal. For Ohio State, not so much.

The Mountaineers finished off an erratic season with a thrilling victory over North Carolina in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. It was an unprecedented fourth bowl win in a row. The win helped ease West Virginia's disappointment for not winning the Big East conference race and missing out on a major bowl.

With the bowl victory, the Mountaineers finish 9-4 and the fans and boosters are in a good frame of mind heading into the off season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are among the all time successful programs in college football. But the Scarlet and Gray have been decidedly blue when it comes to their bowl experience in recent years.

Back to back blowout losses in the B.C.S. championship game have caused an inferiority complex in the Buckeyes Nation. Some Buckeye fans were no doubt relieved that they wouldn't be subject to another humiliation in this season's B.C.S. title game.

Instead, the Buckeyes earned an invitation to the Fiesta Bowl to face Texas. A match-up that did nothing to alleviate the fears of Buckeye fans of another beat down of their team on the national stage.

Ohio State didn't win the Fiesta Bowl, but they weren't embarrassed either. The Buckeyes could have folded after falling behind 17-6 in the third quarter. But OSU rallied for 2 fourth quarter touchdowns to take the lead.

Only an incredible last second game winning drive engineered by Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy sent the Buckeyes down to defeat.

There are no moral victories in college football. The Buckeyes gave a great fight, but they didn't win. And in college football, it's not about a good season, and another win over Michigan. Its about what have you done for me lately.

So the victorious Mountaineers head into the off season with their heads held high, while the beaten Buckeyes wonder how much longer their post season drought will continue.

You can't buck the bowl system, and that's the way the college presidents want it.
