Banquet Circuit

Jim spends his weekend with old friends and young achievers.

Banquets and broadcasters go together like chicken and mashed potatoes.  And the latter is consumed in abundance by the former many weekends a year.  I had a busy social calendar this weekend, breaking bread at 2 banquets in Charleston and Marietta.

Saturday the West Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Board had its annual awards banquet.  The event was held at the new  Appalachian Power Park.     Its a chance for reporters, anchors, and new directors from around the state to socialize, discuss the news (gossip) and find out how they did in the annual A.P. competition to reward broadcast excellence over the previous  years.

WTAP won its share of the awards.  The real fun is watching the joy on a young journalist's face when he or she  hear their name called for winning a category.   It runs the range from joy, to relief, to trying to look calm (and not trip)  as you walk up to the podium to accept your prize.

Since the banquet was held at a Appalachian Power Park, we dined on hot dogs, and hamburgers, and then took in ball game as the Power hosted Greensboro Grasshoppers.  A good time with good friends.

Sunday was another awards banquet.  A little closer to home.   It was the first annual WTAP-Burger King All  Mid Ohio Valley basketball team banquet

The station hosted a soiree for this year's honorees at the Lafayette Hotel.  25 of the honorees and their guests were on hand  for a dinner and an awards ceremony.

Nothing like this just happens without alot of planning and hard work.   WTAP General Manger Roger Sheppard deserves the credit for backing the All MOV Basketball Team, planning the banquet, and making sure everything come off without a hitch.
After a "getting to know you session" at the start, we had dinner and then the Awards presentations.     We showed highlights of the top girls and boys players in the Valley and recounted their accomplishments as they came up to receive their plaques.
You could see a mixture of accomplishment, pride  and stage fright reflected in their faces.  Some are headed on to college on scholarships, while others will be back again season looking to perform more magic moments on the courts around the area.
Saturday  I experienced continuity at the WV AP banquet, and Sunday I witnessed the start of a new tradition at the WTAP All Mid Ohio Valley Basketball Team banquet.
All in all, a very fulfilling weekend on the banquet circuit..
