June is a crazy month on the national and local sports scene
We've got NBA, NHL, high school football, golf, tennis, track, college baseball, American Legion baseball, running etc..... all competing for attention on the air and on the sports page.
On the local sports scene this week, we've got an eclectic mix from whch to choose. This weekend alone, baseball,softball, and track wrapped up with championships in Ohio and West Virginia. Legion baseball returned the "Boys of Summer" to a baseball diamond near you in Parkerburg, Belpre, Marietta and Beverly. Plus there was a marathon and 10 mile race just down the road in Cairo.
The Top-Flite Junior golf tour returns on Monday . kicking off the season at the Golf Cup of West Virginia, and Tuesday the would be Tiger Woods are in Ravenswood to play the Green Hills Layout
All week long dozens high school football are getting ready for the 16th annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Classic. These are the best of the best from last season's senior crop going head to head in a West Virginia vs. Ohio all star football game. It's good football for a great cause. The game is set for 7pm Friday June 12th at Parkersburg's Stadium Field.
Then next weekend is Mid Ohio Sports Hall of Fame weekend. 9 inductees with extraordinary accomplishments in the area sports scene will get their due. The class of 2009 will be honored with a banquet Saturday. And the inductee plaques will be unveiled in the MOVSHOF display case at the Grand Central Mall.
That's just the first full week of June. In the coming week's, West Virginia high schools will begin their out of school coaching seasons. Starting on June 14 and running through the rest of the Month coaches will be able to work on conditioning, training, and teaching the fundamentals. It builds spirit and gives players the chance to work on what they need to improve when their sport rolls around next season.
Whatever your avocation, from bicycling, to dirt track racing, to youth soccer, to softball....you don't have to look very far to find it.
June may seem like a month of endings, but it's only the beginning of the next cycle of sports.
