This is one of my favorite weekends of the year. The Mid Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame has just enshrined its 12th class of deserving inductees.
It's a group of 10 individuals that differ in age, race, and sex. But they have one thing in common. As a player, coach, or administrator, their accomplishments set them apart from the rest.
The Mid Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame was the brainchild of the the late Bob Zide. He gathered together a group of like minded individuals and other movers and shakers in the area and their work made it a reality.
The Hall of Fame's mission is to recognize those achievers who have set a superior standard by their talent and feats, and ensuring that their contributions to our region's sports legacy live on.
It's hope is to inspire future generations to aspire to athletic excellence through the ideals of hard work, teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship.
The Hall of Fame includes the legends of sport in our region from Earle "Greasy" Neale to Mary Ostrowski.
The Class of 2009 is deserving in it's own right. It's made up of athletes and coaches who raised the bar in their sport by their accomplishments.
Saturday night they were honored at a banquet. They were awarded their plaques and gave their acceptance speeches. The speeches run the gamut from moving to amusing. But they usually include the theme of gratitude. To their parents and families for making a difference in their lives. And to a coach, teammate, or mentor who nurtured their talents and turned potential into success.
Then on Sunday it came time for the unveiling of the 2009 Hall of Fame plaques at the Grand Central Mall. Its a more informal affair. But it gives the new inductees a sense permanence and belonging. They ARE now Mid Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame members. They're plaques will be on display for all to see at the mall, or at the Parkersburg City Building.
