The Bird is the Word

People are flocking to Twitter and so is WTAP Sports

If you are young and hip (not me), or just use a computer on a regular basis (me), there's a good chance you already know about Twitter.

It's a social networking site that  bills itself  as " a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"

Twitter's logo is a bird on a tree branch.  and those messages are known as Tweets.  Tweets are short tidbits of 140 keyboard characters or less.  As you type in your Tweet, a countdown clock lets you know how close you are to reaching your limit.  If you go over the limit...well I'm a color inside the lines guy myself, so I don't know.

You can send and receive messages to a target group of  people who follow you,  and people you follow.  Just about everybody is on Twitter, from your average  Joe, to celebrities, to politicians.

The terse bursts  range from the mundane " I'm gonna  walk my dog",  to the profane "That @#5$ LeBron shud give up the tape!"

The best feature is the hot topics and search mode.  You can see,  in just about real time, what people are Tweeting about the hot story, or event of the day.

News organizations use  Twitter to send out breaking news updates in the form of Tweets that  use links to direct you their websites if you want the latest information

WTAPSports (one word)  has been on Twitter since last March.  Anthony Lima, our weekend sports anchor/reporter/new media wizard  came up with  the idea and got us a roost on the Twitter tree

Since then, we've been sending out Tweets on what's going on in the area sports scene and linking to video of stories we've covered.

So if you're on Twitter, or are going to join up, feel free to follow WTAPSports.   We'll be glad to have you in  the flock.
