Tornado Damage and Wind Speeds

Everyone wants to know whether it was declared a tornado. But why?

The recent tornado-like damage in the Mid-Ohio Valley has everyone wondering how powerful the storms were and if they were a tornado or not.

Who cares if they are declared a tornado or not?  Wind damage is wind damage.. and the injuries and fatalities caused are real.

But late Friday, the National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in almost all damage locations in SE Ohio and WV.  Here's a brief summary: 
 
Wirt County - Palestine  EF 1    Wind Speed Max. 100 mph
 
Wood County  -- Belleville  EF 3    Wind Speed Max. 160 mph
 
Meigs County -- Reedsville  EF3   Wind Speed max.  150 mph
 
Athens County --  Nelsonville  EF 2
 
Athens County -- Athens High School  --- ruled a downburst, Wind Speed  near 100 mph

Athens County --  Auto Tech Bldg --   wind speed  80-100 mph
