Boy, what a day it has been!
After leaving Gallway this morning, we visited the Cliffs of Moher... one of the top attractions in all of Ireland. It features an interpretive center carved from the rock hillside above the cliffs! Two hours is just not enough for this impressive feature.
On the way to Bunratty Castle, we made a detour to visit an attraction of great local interest: Bernie McDonough’s Dromoland Castle!
This 5-star hotel was once owned by the MOV magnet, and many of his business partners, friends and supporters wanted to stop by and see it. A golf tournament was in progress at the time, so we could only turn around in the Car Park and snap a bunch of photos. We'll try to share some of them later.
We continued a short ways to Bunratty Castle, a combination of Greenfield Village and Renaissance Festival. Dodge rain showers again, we toured the 14th century castle, the historic manner house, mills, village and flower garden. But the big draw is a castle that was restored in 1954-60 and features three towers with circular staircases of 39 steep steps. Some of us climbed them all, but it was worth the view.
This evening, we rode a half hour to another castle for a dinner theatre presentation of madrigals, harp, violin and medieval feast.
Of course, someone submitted several names to be singled out, and yours truly got to sit at the head table with a robe and crown on his head as one of the Provincial Kings! We had great fun, a terrific time, and even a sing-along on the motor coach back to the hotel.
Another full day is planned for tomorrow as we head for Killarny and then the Ring of Kerry the day after.
So much to do and so much to share. Wait til you see the photos! Our fellow travelers have been urging video be sent to WTAP to share. (Blackmail video and more, to be sure!)
