It always seems that Marietta lucks out when the weather cooperates with the Sternwheeler Festival.
More times than not, the weather is fine.
This year, I stood on the second floor balcony outside the Lafayette Hotel in Marietta and gave the favorable weather forecast on Friday...thanks to the generosity of the Weber family of Webers' Market.
The chance of showers held off nicely for Friday evening, and allowed area Football games to go off without a hitch.
Other areas in Ohio were not so lucky, as the remnants of Gustav continued to stream from Cincinnati through Columbus and Cleveland. But the moisture didn't sweep into the WTAP viewing area, until overnight and Saturday morning.
The overcast conditions and drizzle never stuck around for long, but the weather improved for the rest of the weekend. Cooler, dryer air has been in place for the balance of the weekend.
It's always nerve-wracking when forecasting for a major event in the MOV. There's nothing I can really do to alter the weather or make things better for the participants, but it still weighs upon me.
As much as possible, without distorting the forecast, I try to concentrate on the positive... encouraging people to participate, come out, and enjoy the special events that our area offers.
It would be a shame to sit on the sidelines and not get out because someone thought it might rain... when the chances are very low to begin with.
Fortunately, this weekend was better than initially hoped for.
How many more will we have this Fall?
Only time will tell.
