Will March Come in Like a Small Marsh Hare?

The change of the season causes an old saying to be refreshed this week.

We've all heard the saying... "Will March come in like a Lion or a Lamb?"

If it comes in as one, it supposedly will go out like the other.  As if the weather conditions at the beginning of the month influence those at the end of the 31 day period.

But this week, a variety of other animals is on my mind.

How many of us remember the classic Saturday Night Live editorial in which John Belushi not only invokes this tired old saying, but also embroiders around the edges, talking about how March comes in in other parts of the world...

Down under in Australia, he claims it comes in like a koala bear, or goes out like a kangaroo.

Or a small marsh hare, or a mongoose...  Well, you get the idea.

In the sketch, Belushi gets so wound up, insisting that  we "haven't heard the really weird part yet"...  and finally collapses in some kind of fit when he topples over and leaves poor frazzled Jane Curtain setting alone to close the sketch behind the news desk.

Well, I don't intend to get carried away, but I can't help but reference that sketch every year at this time when the old saying returns.

I only wish more people knew what I was talking about when I quote, "But that's not the really weird part...."

Gosh, am I really getting that old?
