Springs A Comin'

Despite set backs, we're warming up!

Every year it's the same process...  two steps forward, one step back.

That was a favorite expression of mine long before it was adopted by a popular songwriter of the 70s and 80s...

But it really does describe the progression of the temperature as we climb out of the winter register into warmer spring temps.

Recently, the Mid-Ohio valley has experienced a two night hard freeze which put flowering plants and tender vegetation at risk.  This is not uncommon for this time of year.

We try to get the word out to as  many people as possible, so they don't loose their plants and their investment.
But every year, some people rush out and buy the plants to set out as soon as the first warm day arrives.

And every year, there's a cold snap.

It doesn't vary much, although the timing and duration does... but these set backs always happen.

So when someone approaches me at dinner and says "It's about time for this cold weather to end, isn't it," it is very hard not to launch into a lecture on weather and climate.

Someone always asks, when will this bad weather break, despite the fact that I've just completed an evening forecast on the air just less than an hour ago.  Granted, not everyone watches every newscast, but the forecast really doesn't vary all that much through the day... so I have to assume that they are just looking for something to talk to me about.

At least I hope that's it.

If they really don't recall last year, or the year before or the rest of the 60 plus years that they've been around....

Well, that's what we call climate.  The written history of average temps and weather for a specific location.

Some would do well to examine it before they buy their spring plants.
