You've seen them before... the controversial topics that are evergreen... that means, they pop up year after year... and never fail to stir up controversy.
But do they stir it up, or has the controversy always been there?
Do reporters stir things up just to sell newspapers, or do they just find the conflict and controversy that's inherent in most stories?
This week, I would have made book on the hot topic.
I'm not sure when or why it broke out as it did, but suddenly it was there.
And suddenly, everyone is talking about it...posting about it... blogging about it...arguing about it... commenting about it...
...but does anything change?
My father used to tell me that as a person involved in Sales, he would never have a bumper sticker, college ring, flashy sticker or pin, nor anything else that people could use to pass judgment on him. He was always representing his firm in a neutral, professional business suit.
And he uses to caution me that there were three topics to avoid in all conversations. (You may have heard this in another form before...) Politics, Religion and Sex. His point was that there was NO WAY to hold a discussion on any of these three areas without offending someone... so don't!
I always remembered his advice, and he's been right... whenever one of these topics gets brought up in a group, there are always strong and contrary opinions evoked.
So, I've taken his advice to heart, and rarely rarely, if ever, do I bring up these topics... or, at least two out of the three... (Sorry Dad, but I can't keep quiet ALL the time.) At least I can keep quiet on two of the three...guess which two are left out?
After all, we have to have SOMETHING to write about, don't we?
