Will I See You In September

The arrival of September has also signal the arrival of cooler, drier weather. Whew!

The old song says "Will I see you in September, or loose you to a summer guy?"

I'm sure that when this song was originally penned, it was a tribute to saying goodbye for the summer to a school girlfriend.

Who wouldn't want some assurance that she'd still be yours come September?

Just like the return of a welcome girlfriend, the cooler drier weather of fall has arrived at the start of September.  And unbidden, the song pops to mind.

It just seems amazing to me that regular as clockwork, we get insufferable humidity in August, and just when we think it will never leave, the air mass changes, and cool dry conditions come flooding back.

It's such a relief that I get a burst of energy to go outside and do lawn work... mowing, raking, eves trough cleaning, installation of that vent fan in the attic that I've been putting off all summer due to the oppressive heat up there... etc.

But as welcome as this change is, I never take it for granted.  As I get older, I cope with summer's humidity less and less well.  I tend to live my life within air conditioning more and more.

It makes me wonder what people did before A/C?   I have vague memories of  enjoying summer as a kid in my shorts and t-shirt, running around in a diaper, or being allowed to splash in a wadding pool when it got REALLY hot...like into the 90s.  But how did the adults ever cope?

I guess that's why kool-aid and lemon-aide were invented.
