Driving Ms. Crazy...

It's that time of life, when the young woman gets behind the wheel...

It's been coming for a number of years.

My good friend and co-worker has been teasing me about it for years... "Just wait until she starts driving, Kirk...  then you'll REALLY begin to worry...."

Well, he's only partially right.  My daughter doesn't want to learn to drive.  No interest, no rush!

And I hear this isn't too unusual a reaction today among the youth.  They are not in any rush to learn to drive.

In fact, our testing official at the DMV in my town states it is VERY apparent to them when the child has been pressured into taking the test and applying for the license.  He says when the kid runs down the center cone of three, you can tell that the driver WANTS to fail.

I'm not sure why so many might resist this rite of passage.  Maybe they have seen so many accidents reported on the news that they don't want to become a statistic.

My wife, on the other hand, is tired of being "Mom's Taxi" and having to drive the kids around our town.

Of course, I have a simple solution:  Don't enroll them in anything, don't sign them up, don't let them grow up.  (Yeah, right!)

But I remember the excitement of getting to go through Drivers Education class during the summer and get behind the wheel.  It was only offered in two sessions during the summer months. ( And I also remember the tendency to speed up.  With a Fury III engine under my dad's hood, I was worried at first.  But it was familiarity that bred speed.  Because I was more confident, and IN CONTROL, my speed increased... not because I was reckless!)

So if there's no great hurry to learn to drive during the winter months, I guess I can understand that.

What I don't understand is the $300 fee for drivers education class.  Now THAT'S something that we never had when I learned to drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to get through the coming months?

What tried and true tips do you have for me? Or my family?
