Well, we're off, and everything has been very smooth... at first...
We even boarded early, and pulled out of our pick-up points early. Everyone on the trip is in high spirits and we're looking forward to our trip to Hawaii.
But something funny happened as we rolled out of Marietta.
A woman from Mineral Wells realized that she had not packed her drivers' license for the picture ID value. We were going to have problems.
We pulled the motor coach over at the first rest stop north of Marietta and waited while she called a family member to rush it up to us.
Her son was on the golf course and complained "Mom, I'm having the best golf game of my life...and you want me to leave it to do WHAT?"
About a half hour later, as he drove up I-77 to catch us, he called her and said "Mom, this license isn't going to help you any...it's expired... January 2010. They won't honor it!"
She checked "What color is my hair color in the photo?" "Same as it is now," he replied. "Oh you, that's my new license, cause it just arrived," she exclaimed. "You're trying to prank me!" "Yes, mom, serves you right...."
As soon as the missing photo ID was handed over, we resumed our trip and arrived in Columbus at 8:45pm ready to turn in. Our flight out is 7:30 a.m. and our departure from the hotel is 4:30 a.m.
But some of us decided that we needed a bite to eat. Fortunately, a McDonald's was just across the parking lot, and a surprising number of us met each other in line at McD's.
I noticed how many women had brand new white tennis shoes, that shown in the darkness. It had sprinkled rain, and the black asphalt parking lot made the shoes stand out.
Some of us prefer breaking in a new pair of shoes BEFORE packing for a trip, so they are comfortable... but there doesn't have to be a lot of walking on these Holiday Vacation trips... so it may work on alright.
We're now sitting in the terminal, having passed through security with a minimum of delay. They've just called our flight boarding, so we'll have to get settled. Some are planning on snoozing. 4:30 a.m. came awfully early, but it's a ten hour flight from Atlanta, so there may be lots of opportunity to sleep.
PS: I was able to watch the Fox 10 News last night via streaming and was pleasantly surprised to hear Lauren Keeling talking about great websites to learn about the options on each island in Hawaii.
We will fly to Oahu, then the big Island of Hawaii and finish on Maui. More later.
