We Arrived in Wikiki Beach, Honolulu

After a long day of travel, we try to stay up.

Well, we’ve landed on Oahu, in only 9.5 hours of flying time from Atlanta.
The schedule flight time was 10.5 but we seemed to have made up some time somewhere. Perhaps it is because we sat on the ground in line to take off for an hour, as rain delays were backing up Atlanta.
I saw the rain coming earlier this week, but the projection was that it wouldn’t arrive until the afternoon. Unfortunately, it came in the morning, and that delayed everything coming in, and coming out.
We had one additional woman joining us from Orlando today, and she also was delayed an hour getting out of her airport. We were worried she would not make the 10:50 departure, when she was expected to arrive at 10:20.
But once again Holiday Vacations came through with several alternatives to get her into our plane on time…. Including an electric cart waiting to whisk her from gate to gate in our terminal and board. There were also options involving flying through San Francisco and arriving about 10pm Hawaii time… but that wasn’t needed.
Many of us are very tired, having tried to sleep, or watching movies on board, or just not settled yet. We are attempting to stay up to 9 pm Hawaii time (2 a.m. Parkersburg time) so that we won’t wake in the middle of the night.
Tomorrow we visit the Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor and pay our respects. We have several veterans with us.
I was struck by how pleasantly humid it was and it reminded me of Florida quite quickly. I was also reminded of how much I dislike long flights, and that has colored my thoughts of inquiring about Australia for next year. Maybe something more simple, like Niagara Falls or Mackinaw Island would give me time to rest?
We all walked down Wikiki Beach at sunset and visited the Duke statue in the gathering darkness. Some of us continued down to the international street fair shopping area, where a few bought shells on string for outrageous amounts, some bought short they forgot to pack, and other shopped for Hawaiian shirts and knickknacks. I was surprised to see a surplus of Tsunami (“I dodged a bullet. Feb. 27, 2010”) shirts and snapped one up to sleep in. Seems I have a fair amount of WTAP Polo shirts but no loose fitting t-shirts along.
Well, time to pull the plug and go to bed now.   More later, as we find wireless Internet to send this blog and maybe some pictures home. My cell phone pictures are not going through to Pictures@wtap.com though my text messages are. Have to solve that someday.
