Day 6- Traveling in Montana

Day 6 --  Kirk and his traveling companions have toured the Glacier National Park and proceeded south to Helena, Montana.

The highlight of the tour of Glacier was the “Road to the Sun” tour in restored antique  touring buses. While the day was gloomy, the rain held off until we reached Logan Pass Visitor’s Center, which was soaked as the clouds rolled in.  But the vistas we saw on the way up, as well as the breaks in the clouds to see the surrounding peaks , were very impressive.  Half way down, we rolled back the canvass covers and were able to see mountain peaks above as well as around us.

The antique lodges at every entrance to the park are amazing, as they feature 40 foot talk pacific northwest pine logs set on end and a view back into a bi-gone era.  No TV, no internet no phone in the rooms, but the views are spectacular from the rear veranda.

Our next night in Kalispell in a Red Lion hotel was markedly different, as we had all the conveniences and an indoor pool and two hot-tubs.  Finding open restaurants on a Sunday evening was a challenge, but everyone found dinner on their own and turned in for a good night’s sleep.

Our next day was a journey to Helena, where we lunched and rode on a carousel.  A short bus ride east of town brought us to “The Gates of the Mountains” where Meriweather Lewis paddled up the  Missouri River and found what he thought was the passage through the mountains.

A most  stunning boat ride filled with history, natural history, geology and fire-fighting tales.  It was a most enjoyable boat  ride down the Missouri six  miles watching American Bald Eagles nest, fly and perch. We also saw Indian hieroglyphs and wondered at the rock strata.

As second Red Lion Hotel tonight, and dinner on our own.  Many are tired from the sun and the long day of riding. Tomorrow, we ride toward Yellowstone.
