The Big Block Yard Sale

As the weekend comes to a close, the second annual block yard sale concludes with mixed results. Was it worth the effort or not?

This is my personal blog, not a news story and not the opinion of the station nor anyone else!

About a year ago, someone on our block had an idea to organize a neighborhood-wide yard sale.

They got the neighbors together and picked the second weekend in September for the event. They bought classified ads and printed up posters and yard signs.

The participation in that first year was very high, with about 50 percent of our neighborhood participating in the sale or walking between the homes that had set up tables, displays or some sale.

Then this year, after saving our excess items all year long, we again organized and staged a block-long sale.  Each household erected tables or displays and prepared for customers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

But this year no where near as many people showed up nor as many set-up sales.  In fact, it was my impression that there were only three or four families that set up sales, and sat through the mid-80 temps for the six hours.

We also noticed no where near as many O.U. students and grad students wander through. The reason is not clear, but it may be because Sorority Pledging was going on this day as well.

Our sales were not steady, and not quick as many as the first year.  Though we did sell one or two big items, that boost our income total to slightly more than last year.

Was it worth it?

Oh yes, if only to support the neighborhood, but also to reduce the clutter in our household. And we have the use of the cash that was freed up so that we can pay some bills and defray some daily expenses like school lunches, etc.

So, will we do it again?  Of course, cause we have so many items left over to sell...but next year, we will again hope for good weather, and perhaps there will be more publicity to support the effort.

Time will tell!
