Fans Say Thanks for Broadcast

E-mails from faraway fans of WIlliamstown and St. Marys

As many of you know, WTAP was permitted to broadcast the Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 WV Single 'A' High School football semi-final championship game betweenm St. Marys High School and Williamstown High School.
That occurred through the help of the WV Secondary Schools Activities Commission and Director Gary Ray; officials at both schools; a lot of hard work by the technical folks here at WTAP; and of course to the sponsors who helped make it financially possible for us to do the game.
THE FANS deserve a large amounty of credit, too, for turning out and buying so many tickets.
This was the second time in three seasons that the two schools have faced each other at this point in the post-season. In 2005 when WTAP carried the semi-final game live, it was the first time a WV Single 'A' high school playoff game had ever been televised live.
Whenever we carry a game live on TV, we also send it out live to the internet, and we try to spread the word about that webcast ahead of time, so that local fans can inform faraway fans, who can then "tune in" via the internet.
During Friday night's game, WTAP Sports Director Jim Wharton, encouraged folks who were watching via the internet -- regardless of where they were -- to write to us and let us know what they thought of the game.
We received nearly two dozen e-mails over the weekend alone. It may be that we will get more in the days to come.
Most writers were very appreciative of the fact that we were carrying the game live on TV and on the internet. Three writers were upset that we did not show as many sideline shots of the St. Marys team or close-up shots of the St. Marys fans.
I wrote back to these folks, thanked them for taking the time to write, and let them know that our announcers had to be in the press box (which was on the Williamstown side) and our live truck had to be parked behind the press box. Technically, we could not run camera cables all the way to the other side of the field to capture the sideline and fan shots that we were able to get on the WIlliamstown side. But I also reminded the writers that whenever we have covered St. Marys home games this season (which we have done at just about every home game), we only shot video on the St. Marys side and only shot video of the St. Marys fans, sidelines and cheerleaders. We wished we could have gotten better and more shots of the St. Marys sidelines in the Nov. 23 game, but we could not. Nonetheless, I (and most writers) thought the broadcast was terrific.
So here they are -- the e-mails from faraway fans of both teams. Enjoy!
Thanks so much for running this. I'm not in the Middle East or anything, just western Kentucky!!! But, I still like to follow my alma mater...SMHS...was hoping for the best as I watch the kids and grandkids of friends and relatives "walking in our old shoes!!" Thanks again for utilizing technology in the same spirit i(t) was invented!!
Thank you for the telecasting the St. Marys v. Williamstown playoff game tonight via the Internet. Living in South Carolina, it is the only way I get to see the Blue Devils play football. The quality of the broadcast was excellent... both the visual and the play by play of the announcers... Jim and Mike.

I am writing to thank you for having the SMHS-Williamstown football game on the internet.  I am a 1967 graduate from SMHS  and spend the winter months in Yuma, Arizona.  Although I did not like the outcome I really enjoyed the game.  My neighbors enjoyed my cheering.  Again Thank You and I hope it will be shown next year.

Dear WTAP,
Thanks for broadcasting the SM vs Williamstown game live on the internet. I am writing from Fleet Activities Yokosuka Japan, I am a graduate 2002 graduate of St.Marys High School. It's nice to be able to see my alma matter play some football. The only thing I did not like about the broadcast is the fact you only showed the Williamstown fans. It would have been nice to see some of the people from St.Marys. And of course I am not happy of the outcome of the game.... But we all have something to cheer about "LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS"

We are disappointed in the one-sided broadcasting.  Announcing of a playoff game should be impartial.  What about the SM fans, are they not even there?  You are showing no footage of SM fans that are there supporting their team as well!
