We can really tell when there's something big that went on when we look at the traffic on our website after-the-fact.
On Wednesday December 5, when weather was looking bad, the web traffic at wtap.com went through the roof.
Then on Sunday, December 16, a day when web traffic was flowing smoothly and predictably, the news of Rich Rodriguez's departure hit like an avalanche.
We had nearly FOUR TIMES the number of page views at wtap.com that day as we do on a normal Sunday.
The web channel worked great and there were no problems.
We started running information on wtap.com about his impending departure in the early afternoon. We kept updating that throughout the day, hours before our next scheduled newscast on WTAP News at Eleven. Breaking news won't wait for the next scheduled newscast!
We sent out an E-News Alert, to which folks can subscribe for free, giving them a heads-up on their computers.
We ran crawls across our three TV stations, to let folks know what was going on and to let them know more info was available at wtap.com.
We also encouraged folks to post their comments on the stories about Rodriguez. We got more than 200 in all, from folks all over the place.
It's gratifying when you can use your TV stations and web assets to give people the information they want, when they want it.
