False Alarm...Again

     The A-F-A has struck again.

A-F-A stands for the American Family Association.

This week, WTAP and hundreds of other TV station received mass e-mailings from people, allegedly upset about a new commercial for a fast food restaurant.

The e-mails, all identical, told how folks were highly offended by the sexual content in thee commercials.

The pseudo-authors of these letters indicated how these commercials violate local community standards and asked the stations not to air the spots, or if they were already airing them, to stop.

That’s sort of like when you get an angry overdue notice with big, red scary letters on it from a business and then – in fine print – it says, “if you have already paid the bill, please dis-regard this notice.”

     Several points:

First, whenever we start getting identical e-mails we stop reading them. It’s that simple. Want to get our attention, speak from your heart and tell us how YOU feel, not how some huge conglomerate which is trying to flex its political muscle by seeing how many of its members it can rally to a cause, tells you to feel.

Second, we weren’t even running the commercial and neither were most TV stations in the !  After doing some research, we found out that the commercials are appearing in only a few markets in the entire

So thousands or perhaps millions of people responded to the A-F-A’s plea to forward these goofy e-mails, wasting their time and energy on an issue that WAS not nor would ever BE an issue in their communities.

But once again, with the A-F-A, it has nothing to do with a worthy cause. It has everything to do with how many people it can stir into action and how those people can be manipulated to further A-F-A’s political agenda.

If you’re upset about something we do here at WTAP, I hope you’ll let me know.

But if the A-F-A tells you to be upset with us about something we are NOT doing or may NEVER do, tell them to take a flying leap.
