October 5: A Red Letter Day

I’d like to ask you to circle a very important date on your calendar.

The date is Friday, October 5th.

That’s less than two weeks from now.

What’s so special about October 5th?

It’s the date of the annual cross-city football game between Parkersburg South and Parkersburg High School .

This year’s game will be played at Erickson All-Sports Facility in South Parkersburg .

This rivalry, now dating back nearly 40 years, is known as one of the hottest in the entire state of West Virginia .

Usually, tickets for the game sell out within hours of going on sale at both schools.

When both teams are having successful seasons, this event becomes very special.

But when you have one team that’s on top of the ratings and the other team is in a re-building year, ticket sales often lag, even though the game has seen many dramatic upsets over the years.

WTAP has permission from the schools to show this game live, as we have done for the past two years.

But we can ONLY do that if the game is a sell-out!

If it is not sold out, we will only be allowed to carry the game on tape-delay, later that night and on Sunday morning.

We love showing this game live. It brings the community together in the spirit of the moment.

Doing it live, also allows us to send it out over the internet live, where former residents and fans of both teams can watch the game – as it happens – almost anywhere in the world.

The feedback we get from those internet games, is incredible.

October 5th will be a real test of the loyalty of fans of both schools.

Will South fans come out and support their team, despite its record so far this season?

Will PHS fans make the trip to Erickson to support their team against its fiercest rival?

I hope folks who can go to the game, will do so.

And I hope that those who can’t go, who can’t get a ticket, or who are living faraway, will be able to watch the game live here on WTAP-TV or on wtap-dot-com.

But that will be up to you, the fans of both schools.

Don’t let your teams down.
