Drug War Underway in Valley
You could play a part in combating the drug culture
Whether or not you want to believe it, the Mid-Ohio Valley is in the middle of a drug war. Almost never does a day go by, without some report of a major heroin bust or meth lab incident. If you doubt that a lot of the crime in this area is related to drugs, you’re just not paying attention. We hear of there being connections to drug networks in Detroit and Columbus. We have heard that it is more lucrative for drug dealers to sell drugs here rather than those larger cities, because they can get more money here due to less competition from other large drug dealers. Those who are arrested here are usually at the low end of the drug hierarchy. Putting them in jail does little to stem the flow of drugs as there will always be someone willing to step up and take that position. The thing that is scary about all of this is the lengths to which drug dealers will go, if they begin to feel pressure. I think of a group of high school students who were killed in Huntington a few years ago, because they stumbled in to a drug deal gone bad. That could happen here. I applaud the efforts of all of the police agencies in our area who are doing an excellent job of gathering information and making arrests. But what they need is for EVERYONE in this area to keep their eyes open for suspicious activity. If you suspect that something fishy might be going on, you should call police. You might save someone’s life. You might help save your neighborhood. The only way we can keep drug dealers from over-running our community is to raise the cost of doing business, through relentless pursuit, arrests, convictions and long sentences. Even then, victory is not assured. But we have no choice. We are all in this together and we all need to be ready to act when necessary. That’s this week’s editorial.
