The high school football season is here and TheNewsCenter is gearing up for another busy year!
It all got underway this past Friday, with the season debut of WTAP’s Friday Night Football Frenzy at 11:15pm.
That’s our weekly highlights-and-scores-show which is now in its 15th season, if my records are correct!
Also on Friday, we did the first of our complete local high school and Marietta College football games for the season.
Friday’s game featured the Ritchie Rebels at the St. Marys Blue Devils.
Every year, we try to carry at least one game involving each of the eight main high schools in our coverage area.
But for the first time since we started carrying complete games about ten years ago, we will NOT have a complete Williamstown High School football game AT ALL this year.
School official say that’s because they have only four home games this season, and they are concerned that any telecast we would do – live or tape-delayed – will hurt ticket sales.
We have offered to pay our normal amount for the rights to carry the St. Marys at Williamstown game live on October 3rd, but the school came back, asking for more than TWICE that amount, and also wanting us to pay a huge amount just to carry this regular-season game on tape delayed basis, something we have never done.
Contrary to what you might think, we do NOT make a big profit on these games.  Our expenses eat up much of what we make from advertising.  And we’re not going to go back and gouge our advertising partners to pay these outrageous fees.
We have been working on this for months with no success and finally decided to carry the previously mentioned Ritchie-St. Marys game instead.
We will still cover as many Williamstown games as we can on our Football Frenzy Show, but I wanted you to hear it -- straight from the source -- as to why we will NOT be carrying any Williamstown games in their entirety this year.
We hope the situation will permit us to carry one of their games next year.
