Politics, Football, the Big 12, and Alan Longstreet

A hodge-podge of topics in the new year

Several topics for this week’s editorial…

First, politics.  I’m waiting to hear which candidate for President has the audacity to say that this November’s election “will be the most important election in our history.” Someone will say it. I can’t wait to see who it is.
Because, it will most likely NOT be the most important in our history. Politicians like to say that to puff up their own importance. Every presidential election is important, but I would argue that the 1860 Presidential election, when the risk if civil war hung in the balance, was the most important in our history. And luckily, the voters made the right choice.
Next, sports. Can you believe the way that WVU dis-mantled Clemson in the Orange Bowl? Our sports poll, the previous day, showed that most people believed WVU would lose big, lose close, or win a close one. Instead they won 70-to-33. Incredible. I have never seen a WVU team manhandle a quality team like Clemson before. It was a game for the history books, that’s for sure.

And speaking of sports, WTAP’s My5 station is now the home of Big 12 Basketball…as well as Big East Basketball. Our first Big 12 game was this weekend. So if you love college basketball, if you love WVU or Big East Basketball, and if you want to see the kind of competition WVU’s team might be up against next season, if it jumps to the Big 12, check out our schedule for all of the Big 12 action. You can find it on the sports page of wtap-dot-com.
Finally, the departure of WTAP meteorologist Alan Longstreet from our Daybreak and Noon News. Some of you may have heard us announce that he was leaving us to take a meteorologist job at WJBK, the FOX affiliate in Detroit, Michigan.  It was an incredible opportunity for him to move back closer to his home area, and a quantum leap upwards in terms of TV market size. We are proud of him and wish him all the best. We hope to announce his permanent replacement on Daybreak very soon.
