BELPRE, Ohio (WTAP): An elderly couple was forced to flee their home Tuesday night, after a fire broke out in their kitchen.
The Washington County Sheriff's Department says it received the call shortly after 7 P.M.
The Belpre Fire Department says it started in the kitchen of the home at 2216 Murray Street.
Firefighters say thankfully, the couple made it out safely.
While officials are still investigating the cause, some neighbors say they heard some suspicious noises.
"We was at our house, we heard a loud boom," said Neighbor Penny Neff. "I turned around and looked over to the adjacent apartments and saw a great, big, long black cloud going clear up to the sky. Moments later we started hearing little popping sounds just going crazy. Then we walked over the street and seen the house was on fire."
The fire department is still assessing the damage, but they say the blaze was contained to the back of the home by the kitchen.
